Cappadocia Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Tour
We arrived at our hotel in Cappadocia, Turkey eager and excited to take a hot air balloon ride. As the time to start getting ready approached, we began to fear that a rain storm would interfere with our plans. We got into our minivan and headed toward the main office of the balloon company. They served us coffee, juice and cookies as we waited for more passengers to arrive. We learned that there were 92 balloons set to fly this morning! Soon we were herded outside and driven toward the launch point. Our balloon was an oval tube that was open at the top and bottom. We stood inside of it while the burners filled the balloon with hot air above our heads." As the sun started rising from behind nearby mountains," we looked back to see hundreds of colorful hot air balloons beginning to rise above the city." Gradually ours rose until we were about 200 feet above ground looking down on houses and roads below us." Our pilot had a headset so he could communicate with other pilots about where they were going and what was happening on the ground." You know how exciting it is to arrive in Cappadocia, Turkey! We were so eager to take a hot air balloon ride that we began to fear a rain storm would interfere with our plans.

It was a remarkable sight. All of the balloons filled with hot air and began to rise into the sky, as if by magic. As our pilot lifted off I looked down at the minivans parked below us, filled with our fellow passengers. They looked like children playing in their sandbox as we drifted overhead and away from them toward our first stop at Alacahöyük.
Our balloon had an oval shape that was open at both ends so we could see out easily while standing inside it (there are some other shapes available which have more walls). Our pilot fired up his burner and slowly began to fill our balloon with hot air above our heads. Then he turned on some music which was broadcast through speakers mounted outside of each passenger's window so we could hear it even though we were surrounded by balloons filled with noise!

Our balloon was an oval tube that was open at the top and bottom. We stood inside of it while the burners filled the balloon with hot air above our heads. The balloons are inflated with hot air, which is why they can float. They are made of a material that is very strong but also very light, so they don't weigh as much as you'd think they would.
Soon we were herded outside and driven toward the launch point. Our balloon was loaded onto a trailer and driven to the launch point, where we would take off in our flying machines!
As the sun started rising from behind nearby mountains, we looked back to see hundreds of colorful hot air balloons beginning to rise above the city. Gradually ours rose until we were about 200 feet above ground looking down on houses and roads below us.
As the sun started rising from behind nearby mountains, we looked back to see hundreds of colorful hot air balloons beginning to rise above the city. Gradually ours rose until we were about 200 feet above ground looking down on houses and roads below us. I could see cars moving along streets in clusters as they waited at stoplights. It was amazing how beautiful everything looked from up there!
The pilot pointed out various landmarks in Cappadocia—towers, churches and other buildings that were built into rock formations; some homes made entirely out of rocks carved into different shapes by farmers over generations. We also saw several Turkish ruins dating back thousands of years. The view was incredible!
Our pilot had a headset so he could communicate with other pilots about where they were going and what was happening on the ground. He was very conscious of avoiding power lines as we floated along.
When the balloon started to rise, our pilot had a headset so he could communicate with other pilots about where they were going and what was happening on the ground. He was very conscious of avoiding power lines as we floated along.
This is an experience you'll never forget!
At first it seemed like there were so many hot air balloons in front of us that it might seem repetitive or boring but they spread out pretty quickly and each one took a slightly different route through the area over some of this amazing scenery.
We are all seated in the basket, with a professional photographer documenting our journey. The balloons take off in a very organized manner and it seems like there are so many balloons in front of you that it might seem repetitive or boring but they spread out pretty quickly and each one takes a slightly different route through the area over some of this amazing scenery.
It is still dark as we fly along with our eyes fixed on incredible rock formations as they come into view below us. There is something magical about seeing this landscape lit up by hot air balloons against an early morning sky illuminated by soft colors of sunrise. This experience was absolutely amazing!

We were very lucky that our flight was not interrupted by rain or winds. The flight lasted about 30 minutes and we returned to the launch site with smiles on our faces.
